All-Russian Research Institute of Geophysical Exploration Methods (VNIIGeofizika)

VNIIGeofizika was established in 1944 as a research institute focussing on geological and geophysical surveys performed during prospecting and exploration for oil and gas deposits. Nowadays, it is one of the largest scientific enterprises in Russia performing geophysical surveys and research.

VNIIGeofizika is a specialized geophysical enterprise with a great potential. Oil and gas seismic survey results obtained by the company facilitated or provided for the discovery of major commercial fields in the Kaliningrad, Volga, Caspian, North Caucasus, and Eastern Siberia Regions, republics of the Central Asia, Ukraine, Belarus, and 16 foreign countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

VNIIGeofizika’s specialists discovered over fifty fields of oil, gas, and condensate (including the Astrakhanskoye and Tengizskoye, Sinyavskoye, Azovskoye, Markovskoye, Biryuchye, Tuzlovskoye, and Zernogradskoye) and prepared them for the development. It also established over 100,000 linear kilometres of reference and regional section lines in Russia, the CIS and non-CIS countries.

The enterprise performs prospecting for ore-bearing structures and formations of shields and folded regions. It studies the Earth’s crust, registers and monitors earthquakes.

Types of activities:

VNIIGeofizika specializes in comprehensive geophysical surveying, providing services in the field of geological environment investigation, prospecting, and exploration for hydrocarbons and solid minerals, as well as innovative developments to public institutions and other organisations.

  • Seismic (common depth point (CDP), correlation refraction, deep refraction, and earthquake converted-wave methods), electrical, and surface gravity surveys, including detailed and areal studies (3D)
  • Processing and interpreting seismic, electrical, gravity, and magnetic data using modern special software and systems, including 2D and 3D modelling
  • Seismic surveying, seismicity monitoring, as well as establishing, equipping, and maintaining sustainable (seismic) polygons
  • Geotechnical studies of the geological environment for construction purposes, searching for buried wastes
  • Summarizing geological and geophysical data, their reprocessing and reinterpreting, drawing up cartographic materials
  • Supervising
  • Information and analytical support to geophysical surveys
  • Archiving, storing, and recovering geophysical data
  • Preparing sites for drilling when prospecting for oil, gas, and solid minerals
