Artem Poltavsky, the Director of AO Rosgeo’s Environmental Projects Department, informed of the above the senators and deputies who visited the storage pits of the Baikal pulp and paper mill during the Assembly’s offsite meeting of the Irkutsk Region in the city of Baikalsk. The event was dedicated to the development of economic activity within the boundaries of the Central ecological zone of the Baikal designated natural area. The waste elimination of the Baikal pulp and paper mill (BTsBK) was discussed.
A. Poltavky spoke about the preparation of the new project on area rehabilitation and waste disposal. In particular, he outlined that engineering map surveys have been completed. Currently the results are subject to office studies. Simultaneously, the test surveys are being conducted to find the best project on the mill’s waste elimination with its subsequent transfer into the soil (after-product).
"We are performing the test surveys, during which we will test dehydration technologies. We are creating a network of production and environmental control, which will allow to monitor groundwater by various indicators throughout the maps. The test surveys in Baikalsk have shown that the dehydration technology can be performed at temperatures up to -30 degrees," said A. Poltavky.
During the meeting, Sergey Sokol, the Chairman of the Assembly of the Irkutsk Region, the members of the Federation Council and regional deputies visited the storage pits of BTsBK’s waste, which has been stored on the shore of Lake Baikal for more than 50 years.
"Currently the company is actively working with waste samples. The main goal is to reduce their hazard category," said A. Poltavky.
In 2018, AO Rosgeo, with the help of RG-Ekologiya’s subsidiary, conducts industrial experiment works at its own expense to specify the contents of ten transferred sludge storage pits. The samples of solid and liquid waste were sent for laboratory analysis to the Center of Laboratory Analysis and Technical Measurements (TsLATI) to get the opinion about the real content of the BTsBK’s waste.
The project adjustment process will be completed by July 2018.
