Kama Research Institute for Comprehensive Surveying of Deep and Ultradeep Holes was founded in 1986. The institute carries out comprehensive studies of deep and ultradeep wells, evaluation of deep oil and gas potential of Russia’s major hydrocarbon regions, the scientific substantiation of geological exploration activities, and quantification of hydrocarbon resources in the northern and western regions of the Ural-Volga Region. It is also engaged in complex work on geomonitoring and environmental protection at the existing oil and gas fields, as well as hydrogeological surveys focussed on groundwater monitoring.

Types of activities: 
  • Comprehensive studies of rocks and fluids in deep and ultradeep parametric wells:
    • Extensive laboratory lithological and stratigraphic, geochemical, petrophysical, and hydrogeochemical studies and database compilation
    • Pyrolytic study using the Rock-Eval 6 method
    • Development of generalized sections
    • Oil and gas potential evaluation of the deep-level areas of drilling and preparation of final reports
  • Scientific support for drilling deep and ultradeep parametric holes
  • Development of criteria and indicators for deep oil and gas potential of the major oil and gas provinces in Russia
  • A full range of geotechnical surveys for construction purposes, including in permafrost conditions:
    • Drilling, locating underground workings, and sampling
    • Cone penetration testing and field pilot tests (stamp, pile, etc.)
    • Testing for groundwater inflow
    • Hydrogeological investigations, laboratory testing of soil, and water analysis
  • Drilling and repairing artesian boreholes to supply drinking and non-potable water
  • Electrical exploration of all types
    • Geophysical surveys for ores, non-metallic and construction minerals, and water
  • Comprehensive surveys on geomonitoring and environmental protection at the existing oil and gas fields:
    • Examination of individual and areal sources of potential pollution to identify existing leaks of mineral water and oil or risks of their occurrence
    • Inspection of natural sites (rivers and reservoirs, groundwater sources, forests, etc.) to define protected areas and develop measures to avoid contamination and pollution
    • Creation of an observation geomonitoring network, evaluation and prediction of spatial and temporal variations in conditions at the zone of active water exchange
  • Comprehensive hydrogeological surveys to monitor groundwater deposits
  • Scientific substantiation of activities and quantification of hydrocarbon resources in the northern and western regions of the Ural-Volga Region
    • Tectonic zoning of northern and western parts of the Volga-Ural oil and gas province
    • Development of registers of areas prospective for oil and gas, qualitative and quantitative geological and economic evaluation of the potential of Permokarbonian, Devonian, Vendian, and Riphean oil and gas formations

    • Monitoring the status and structure of hydrocarbon resources and resources within the subjects of the Russian Federation
    • Study of basic formation and distribution patterns of oil and gas fields located in the Volga-Ural oil and gas province
    • Developing recommendations to improve the effectiveness of deep oil exploration drilling at small-amplitude and small-size local elevations
    • Drafting projects of parametric drilling, prospecting, exploration, and follow-up exploration of oil fields (oil reservoirs)
    • Estimation of oil reserves and resources of commercial categories at new fields
    • Expert review of materials on various types of oil and gas exploration works and ensuring the completeness of the information packages for the licensing of oil and gas prospective areas
    • Comprehensive studies of materials on drilling, geophysical and geochemical surveys in order to improve the efficiency of deep drilling at the licensed areas
    • Compillation of geological information packages for the areas to be licenced
  • Implementation of geological information systems for the analysis and storage of geological and geophysical information
