Rosgeo localized objects promising for iron, coal and oil shale in the Orenburg Region

JSC Votemiro Company (Orenburg Region, a member of Rosgeo state holding) has successfully completed all tasks set in 2018 for the Akbulakskaya area exploration. Specialists are engaged in further geological studies of an object of 1:200000 scale and preparation for publication of State Geological Map 200. The relevant contract was made with A.P. Karpinsky Russian Geological Research Institute (VSEGEI) Federal State Budgetary Institution. Votemiro Company is the subcontractor. The work is funded from the federal budget within the order of the Russian Federal Agency on Subsoil Use.

The area is situated in the south of the Orenburg Region. It is promising for copper, zinc, phosphorites, and oil shales.

The year 2018 saw the interim and final office studies of already available materials and own findings.

The field season 2018 included 1:200000 scale routing within the northern and central parts of the sheet, and studying of quaternary deposits and key sections. The routes passed along the right banks of the Malaya Khodba, Kurala, and Karabutak rivers, through the Bezymyanny coomb, near the Novoaleksandrovka village, along the left side of the Khodna river, along the pit close to the Kulansai village, northward the Novopavlovka village.

The year 2018 also saw the drilling of four structure test wells with total depth of 1,600 linear meters.

The most interesting materials were obtained for well no. 24, 460 m in depth. It opened deposits from the Jurassic to the Quaternary period. According to the drilling data, there were seven layers of brown coal discovered in the well, in deposits supposedly of the middle and upper Jurassic age. There are also phosphorites and oil shales discovered, which allowed for preliminary specifying the borders of the Karabutakskaya phosphorite-bearing prospect and localizing a new taxon (oil shales).

There were 6 iron mineralization points in Cretaceous deposits and two points in Jurassic deposits localized in sections and routes.

Based on the structural core drilling results over the current period, there were identified several layers (thin) of brown coals in the south part of the Sol-Iletsk buried high and in the north part of the Peri-Caspian Depression, which allowed for localizing 3 coal manifestation points in the wells there.

The fourth point was detected and described in section no. 2. There are identified 4 thin layers of brown coals up to 10 cm in thickness, with vegetable remains.

All objects have been promptly marked on the map of mineral resources.

The field season accounts for total 500 linear kilometers of 1:200000 scale routes, 140 linear kilometers of 1:50000 scale routes, 57.8 linear kilometers for quaternary deposits (1:200000), 5,100 linear meters of studied key sections. There were prepared and described 180 thin sections.

The composition of Upper Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary deposits was specified more exactly within the Sol-Iletsk buried high and the north part of the Peri-Caspian Depression. There were taken samples to be used for geochemical analysis of geological units, and micro- and macrofauna specimens, which would allow for determining their age more exactly. There were samples of the Quaternary deposits taken to determine the paleopalynological remains.

There were preliminary specified the development areas of eolian sand identified northward the Ilek river, at the eastern margin of the sheet.

The object studies will be continued in 2019.
